3 Common Causes of Damage to the Body of a Vehicle

Updated: Mar 14, 2022

Accidents might be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about damage to your car's body. Many different things can happen to the body of a car, though. In fact, a lot of damage is caused by things that aren't as obvious.

We’ve been in business for a while, and our auto body repair technicians have seen it all! Here are three common causes of damage to the body of a vehicle that we’ve experienced:

1. We’ve seen damage to a vehicle's body caused by bad weather.

When you leave your car out during a hail storm, bad things can happen!

Weather may seem harmless, but in some cases, it can do a lot of damage. In hail storms, ice pellets may fall from the sky and hit the hood or roof of a car. Larger pieces of hail can make noticeable dents that need to be fixed by an auto body repair expert.

In addition to hail, strong winds are a common cause of damage to cars. If a car is parked near a tree, the branches may scratch the paint on the outside. In some cases, branches may fall off the tree and hit the car, causing dents or even shattering the window. The risk of debris being blown onto the car by the wind increases as the wind speeds up. This could dent or scratch the surface of the car.

2. We’ve witnessed carelessness directly cause damage to a vehicle’s body.

Don't you hate it when a shopping cart loses control? Panic sets in real quick!

With a little extra care, a lot of car damage could be avoided. Many people who work in the auto industry can attest to this! It's a common cause of auto body damage for people to be careless. This includes any damage that happens because of other people’s carelessness!

For example, there are a lot of times when shopping carts get stuck in parking lots and roll into the sides of cars. One more example of negligence-caused damage is dings in a car door caused by another car's door opening up too close to it. They might open their doors too quickly and hit the car next to them. This can make big dents in the door and damage the paint on the car.

Besides shopping carts and car doors, negligent car damage could come from flying sports balls, keys scraping paint, and gates that open into a car, too.

3. Following a vehicle too closely is another common reason a vehicle's body needs to be repaired!

How often do collisions occur as a result of one car following another too closely? Well, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rear-end collisions are the most common type of collision on US highways, accounting for 29 percent of all crashes. These accidents are often caused by one car following another too closely, which is called "tailing."

Even when driving 25 miles per hour, a lot of damage to the body of a car happens when it is hit from behind. About 2.5 million rear-end collisions happen in the United States every year, which is about 28% of all crashes. It's because of this that most of the damage that auto body technicians see is caused by these types of accidents.

In Closing

To sum up, be cautious when the weather is terrible, when you're parked in a lot, or when you're traveling behind another car. If you don't have a garage, consider getting one. Park a bit further away from the store's door, and leave some space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
